According to cultural references, baza is a Louisiana Creole word equivalent to “juke” or “houseparty.” In the chilly Northeast, in the border region of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, BaZa is a quartet of ol’ Bluesmen makin’ a joyful noise. Starting in 1998 and borrowing from the catalogs of classic Delta and Chicago style Blues artists (including Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters) BaZa developed a unique sound which captures the spirit and passion of the Blues delivered with an up tempo intergenerational style.
BaZa is Geof "Goody" Goodell on "Mississippi Saxophone" (harmonica for the uninitiated) guitar and backing vocals; George Panousis on electric bass and backing vocals; Billy Parker on drums, percussive “junk” and harmonious voice; and Doug Philbrook on electric & steel bodied guitars and lead vocals, hollerin’ and moanin’ for your listening pleasure. Geof began playing with BaZa for the release of their CD "Good Time Blues" and joins Doug in acoustic performances. He complements the band's sound with his fiery harmonica, tasteful guitar playing and backing vocals. "Goody" brings a feeling of comraderie to BaZa and is very active in spreading the "buzz" about what the band is doing! George, BaZa's newest bandmate, delivers thoughtful energy on electric bass and backing vocals and brings a dedication to the band that is contagious. He comes to BaZa with acoustic solo and band creds and adds mandolin and guitar for acoustic performances.
Billy, a founding member of BaZa (back to their "Stratton Hill Blues" days,) was a drummer with Elvis impersonator "Golden Joe Baker" and played during his Navy days while stationed in Japan. For BaZa he provides the backbeat on drums and percussion as well as lead & harmony vocals. "Parker plays tight, understated rhythms" ...Douglas Sloan, Metronome Magazine, August 2011. Doug steers the band's sound on electric guitar and lead vocals. As a founding member, he is dedicated to playing and learning the blues and its history. A graduate of the Musician's Institute in Hollywood and the California music scene "Philbrook's guitar work is tuneful and spot-on, while his vocals ooze with an emotive quality that's authentic"...Douglas Sloan, Metronome Magazine, August 2011.
